Eagles GM Howie Roseman explains trading first-round picks with Saints, what it means for Jalen Hurts’ future

The Philadelphia Eagles once had three first-round draft picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, because of head supervisor Howie Roseman working arrangements last offseason with the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins. Roseman has since exchanged away one of those first-round picks, and on Wednesday he separated precisely why.

The Eagles exchanged the No. 16 generally pick, No. 19 generally pick and a 2022 6th round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the No. 18 in general pick, a 2022 third-round pick, a 2022 seventh-round pick, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick. Philadelphia has two first-round picks in every one of the following two years – – the equilibrium Roseman needs on a draft board.

“We were somewhat taking a gander at this year, one year from now, and how much picks that we had in the current year’s draft and attempting to sort of adjust it a tad for an assortment of elements,” Roseman said in a pre-draft public interview Wednesday. “Whenever you check out at having first-round picks and the fifth-year choice, having that many folks on the fifth-year choice.

“Additionally, sort of adjusting simply exploring every one of the players in this draft and the following year’s draft and having more choices and greater adaptability at all positions. We were somewhat getting an early advantage on taking a gander at the following year’s draft as well and seeing that it’s solid along with the current year’s draft. In this way, we thought it caused sense.”The Eagles to have 10 draft picks in 2022, five of which are in the initial three rounds. They have seven picks in the 2023 draft, remembering two for the first round. Philadelphia has eight picks in the 2024 draft, remembering two for the subsequent round.

Draft picks are along with some built-in costs for Philadelphia, thinking about the situation with quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Eagles are giving Hurts this season to demonstrate whether he can be an establishment quarterback, and assisted their poker with giving for the following year’s draft by procuring the Saints’ first-round pick. An unfortunate season from New Orleans sets the Eagles in prime situation to draft one of the top quarterbacks in 2023, projected as a lot more grounded quarterback class than this year.

Assuming Hurts has an unfortunate season, the Eagles could utilize that 2023 draft to observe their establishment quarterback. As has been the case all offseason, Philadelphia is resolved to Hurts and believe him should be that establishment quarterback.

“We’re amped up for Jalen Hurts and we will uphold Jalen and believe him should have an incredible profession in Philly,” Roseman said. “This was about adaptability for our group and about ensuring that we had assets to work in our group for the current year’s draft, yet the following year’s draft going ahead. We thought it appeared to be legit.”
